Kenya Muchagara PB from the Ostrava-based roastery Father’sis a filter coffee that demonstrates why Kenyan coffees have such a strong reputation among specialty coffee enthusiasts. Even the aroma after grinding is intensely sweet and fruity, and in the cup, the flavor unfolds like a rhubarb pie with strawberries, complemented by juicy lime acidity. The coffee is lively, sparkling, and beautifully structured, yet it retains a fuller body and a long, clean finish. Thanks to the washed processing method, the individual flavors come through very precisely and clearly; nothing blends together or gets lost. The “PB” in the name stands for Peaberry, a specific type of bean where only one round bean develops in the cherry instead of two. Such beans tend to be denser, more concentrated, and often deliver a more intense flavor profile and a more pronounced sweetness in the cup.

The coffee comes from the Muchagara Factory in Kirinyaga County, located on the slopes of Mount Kenya and among the most renowned coffee-growing regions in all of Africa. The station is part of the Baragwi Farmers’ Co-operative Society, one of Kenya’s largest cooperatives, which brings together thousands of smallholder farmers and operates several washing stations in the region. Muchagara itself works with approximately 1,700 local growers who cultivate coffee trees at an altitude of 1,700 to 1,800 meters. The region between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya is crisscrossed by rivers and known for its exceptionally fertile, mineral-rich soil. Cooler nights and high altitude slow the ripening of the cherries, giving the beans greater density, more pronounced acidity, and a more complex flavor profile. Furthermore, the SL28 and SL34 varieties have long been among the most prized here due to their ability to produce juicy, fruity, and very elegant coffees.

The washed processing method, typical for Kenya, ensures the cup’s precise and clean character. After being hand-picked, the cherries are mechanically stripped of their skin and pulp and then fermented for 12 to 48 hours depending on current conditions. The coffee is then washed in channels with fresh river water and rests submerged underwater for several more hours, which helps stabilize moisture and highlight the purity of the flavors. This is followed by slow drying on African beds for up to three weeks. It is precisely this meticulous process that gives Kenyan washed coffees their characteristic sparkle, transparency, and distinct fruity acidity. In the resulting cup, the sweetness of strawberries, the freshness of lime, and a creamier texture reminiscent of a buttery rhubarb pie fully unfold.
