Burundi BUMBA from Kmen Coffee Roasters is one of those coffees you remember not only for its flavor, but also for the story behind it. In the cup , subtle notes of linden tea with honey, juicy white grapes, and fresh bergamot unfold. The flavor is clean, light, and elegant, yet offers enough sweetness and depth to keep you enjoying it from the first to the last sip. It’s a perfect example of why washed coffees from East Africa have become so popular among pour-over coffee lovers.
Behind this coffee is Long Miles Coffee, one of the most well-known coffee projects in Burundi. Its goal is not only to produce high-quality coffee but also to help local farmers build more stable conditions for life and work. What began as a collaboration with a few dozen growers now encompasses thousands of families across the region. Long Miles Coffee invests in education, improving processing methods, and combating the so-called “potato defect,” which has long plagued Burundian coffee. Thanks to this work, they are successfully improving the quality of individual lots while also providing farmers with fairer compensation for their labor.
The coffee comes from the Giku area in Kayanza Province and was processed using the washed method. During harvest, individual shipments are carefully tracked using a farmer card system, which allows for much more precise traceability of the coffee’s origin than with standard commercial lots. It is precisely this emphasis on transparency, careful selection, and working with individual micro-lots that are among the reasons why Long Miles Coffee has earned such a strong reputation among roasters worldwide.
