Kenya THUNGURI AA from the Czech roastery Kmen Coffee Roasters is a summer filter coffee that will surprise you with its juiciness, reminiscent of a freshly squeezed fruit smoothie. In the cup, flavors of cranberry juice, sweet citrus, and blackberries gradually unfold, complemented by the clean, sparkling acidity typical of the best Kenyan coffees. The washed processing method allows the individual flavor layers to shine through, resulting in a fresh, clean, and perfectly balanced cup that you’ll enjoy just as much hot as over ice.

The coffee comes from the Thunguri processing station in the Kirinyaga region, which is part of the Kibirigwi Farmers Co-op Society. The station brings together approximately 1, 500 smallholder farmers, each of whom cultivates about half a hectare of land. In addition to coffee, they also grow tea, bananas, beans, and macadamia nuts. The plantations are located at an elevation of 1,700 to 1,800 meters on fertile red volcanic soils, which, together with the local climate, create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the cherries and the development of a complex flavor profile.

This coffee was processed using the washed method, which is known for highlighting the purity of flavors, fresh acidity, and the character of its origin. After being hand-harvested, the cherries undergo careful sorting via water flotation, followed by hulling and a two-phase fermentation that lasts a total of 36 to 48 hours. The beans are then washed and left to rest for another 24 hours in tanks of clean water. It is this step that promotes the development of amino acids and proteins within the bean, contributing to more pronounced acidity and richer fruity notes. Finally, the coffee is dried for several days on raised beds, rested in parchment, and only then shipped for export.

As mentioned in connection with another coffee from Kmen, this is the ideal coffee for guests who want a mild coffee but aren’t particularly picky.
What a letdown—the tones aren't that distinct again…
