Uganda Namugowa from the Ostrava-based roastery Father’s Coffee Roastery combines sweetness, chocolatey depth, and a delicate fruity freshness in a single, well-balanced cup. Notes of cocoa beans and dark chocolate dominate, brightened by a light fruity note reminiscent of ripe peaches and a subtle tea-like character. The result is an espresso that delights with its fullness and sweetness, yet doesn’t feel heavy.
The beans for this coffee come from Uganda’s Mt. Elgon region, where Father’s team personally visited farmers and had the opportunity to follow the coffee’s journey from harvest to drying. Behind this lot is The Coffee Gardens project, which was founded in 2017 with the goal of connecting local growers directly with customers while improving their living conditions, promoting employment, gender equality, and greater transparency throughout the supply chain. Father’s also joined the project and, together with The Coffee Gardens, co-funded the opening of a QC Lab right in Uganda. The lab allows farmers to assess the quality of their own harvest on-site, refine their methods, and, thanks to higher quality, subsequently strive for fairer prices for their coffee.
Namugowa combines three varieties: SL14, SL28, and Nyasaland. SL14 is a Ugandan classic with subtle citrus notes and a slightly tea-like body; SL28 offers more pronounced fruitiness and notes of black currant; and the historic Nyasaland variety from Malawi adds floral and tea-like nuances with a light citrus sweetness. The coffee underwent a washed process with whole-cherry fermentation, in which freshly harvested cherries are first fermented before the skin and pulp are removed. The coffee is then washed and dried on raised beds, allowing it to retain its clean and complex character.
