Kenya Kieni AB from the Ostrava-based roastery Father’s is exactly the kind of coffee that will win you over from the very first sip. Bold, juicy, yet perfectly clean. Notes of elderflower, red currant, and milk chocolate emerge in both the aroma and flavor , coming together to create a complex yet very approachable cup. The acidity is lively and sparkling, reminiscent of fresh forest fruits, yet it is balanced by a velvety texture and a sweet chocolate aftertaste. This Kenyan washed coffee demonstrates why coffees from the Nyeri region are so sought after among fans of both pour-over and modern espresso. Every sip feels clean, energetic, and layered, without any unnecessary over-roasting or heaviness. If you enjoy coffees with a distinctive character but don’t want to sacrifice elegance and sweetness, Kieni AB is definitely worth your attention.
The coffee comes from the Kieni wet mill in Nyeri County, located in Kenya’s Central Highlands between the Aberdare Mountains and the slopes of Mount Kenya. The mill is operated by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which brings together approximately a thousand smallholder farmers working on small family plots. It is precisely the combination of high altitude— around 1,700 meters—a cooler climate, and red volcanic soils that creates ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the cherries. This results in denser, harder beans with a more intense flavor and a more pronounced body in the cup. The Nyeri region has long been considered one of the best places for growing coffee in all of Kenya, and the local SL28 and SL34 varieties have almost cult status among specialty coffee lovers. Another interesting feature is the electronic harvest tracking system at the Kieni station, which gives every farmer an immediate overview of their deliveries and their purchase price. Even such details demonstrate a commitment to transparency and a fair approach toward growers.
The washed processing ensures the clarity and precision of the final cup. After hand-picking, the cherries are de-pulped, then fermented overnight to remove residual sugars from the bean’s surface. The coffee is then thoroughly washed and soaked in water, which helps highlight the clarity of flavors and the typical Kenyan acidity. Drying takes place slowly on raised beds over several weeks until the beans reach the ideal moisture content. It is precisely this slow washed processing that allows the character of the terroir and the SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 varieties to fully shine through. The coffee is clean and elegant, yet intense enough to delight you from the first sip to the last.
