From a family farm in Agaru, Ethiopia, all the way to Ottawa, Canada, and from there to you, September Coffee brings you the juicy Ethiopian RESHAD ABABULGU, full of floral, citrus, and stone fruit notes. In the cup, it’s clean and light, with a distinct floral aroma reminiscent of black tea. The flavor gradually unfolds with sweet apricots and juicy peaches, complemented by a delicate floral note of jasmine and honeysuckle. The profile is rounded out by a fresh citrus note reminiscent of lemon tea, which adds a pleasantly sparkling character.
Reshad Ababulgu took over the family farm in the Agaro area of the Jimma region from his father twenty years ago. Since then, he has been gradually planting newer varieties, including the 74110 used in this lot. The coffee trees here grow at an elevation of 2,050 meters above sea level, and Reshad focuses primarily on quality, which enables him to better support his family and the surrounding community. The 74110 variety was selected in the 1970s at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center for its resistance to coffee cherry disease. Its compact coffee trees also naturally adapt to local growing conditions.
The delicate sweetness of this coffee comes from the white honey processing method, in which the cherry skin is removed after harvesting and sorting, but a thin layer of pulp remains on the bean. The coffee is then dried without washing, allowing the sugars and other compounds from this layer to influence the bean’s final character during the drying process. For this lot, most of the work is done by hand, from harvesting and sorting to the processing itself. The result is a clean and light cup where natural sweetness meets notes of flowers, stone fruits, and citrus.
