Habiba Ahmed from the Prague-based roastery Tribes of Mokha is a Yemeni filter coffee from a limited auction edition. In the cup, notes of goji berry, dark chocolate, molasses, and spices unfold, resulting in a profile characterized by darker fruitiness, a richer sweetness, and a slightly spicy finish. The overall impression is intense, yet still clean and very elegant. This coffee isn’t built on light citrus freshness or delicate floral notes, but on depth, body, and character. It is precisely the combination of dark fruit, chocolatey texture, and molasses-like sweetness that gives this coffee a character that is memorable from the first sip through the long finish.
The coffee comes from Yemen, specifically from the Hayma Dakhiliya area in the Sana’a region , and more precisely from the village of Hejrat Al Ain. The producer is Habiba Al-Sayaghi, whose life is closely tied to both coffee cultivation and caring for her family. She works on the farm every day from dawn, and for her, the coffee trees are not just a source of livelihood, but also part of her family’s tradition and future. The Yemenia variety of coffee trees grow at an elevation of 2,000 to 2,300 meters, where they find ideal conditions for slower ripening and the development of a highly concentrated flavor. It is precisely the combination of the high-altitude environment, ancient Yemeni traditions, and meticulous handcrafting that gives this coffee its distinctive depth, sweetness, and spicy complexity. Furthermore, this is a lot from the limited-edition “Best of Yemen” series, which clearly demonstrates its exceptional quality.
The coffee is processed using the natural method. After harvest, the cherries are dried whole, so the beans remain in contact with the pulp for a longer period and gradually absorb its sugars and aromatic compounds. This is precisely what translates into flavors of goji berry, a richer molasses-like sweetness, and darker chocolate notes that pleasantly anchor the entire cup. The natural processing here doesn’t come across as wild or unrefined, but rather as very harmonious. The result is a coffee that is intense, sweet, and complex, with a long finish and a character that beautifully showcases the strength of its Yemeni origin.
