Kenya Kieni AB from the Ostrava-based roastery Father’s Coffee Roastery is exactly the kind of coffee that will win you over from the very first sip. Bold, juicy, and yet perfectly clean. Notes of elderflower, black currant, and milk chocolate emerge in both the aroma and flavor, coming together to create a complex yet well-defined cup. The lively, sparkling acidity is reminiscent of fresh forest berries, while the velvety texture and sweet chocolate aftertaste provide a pleasant balance.
This Kenyan washed coffee demonstrates why coffees from the Nyeri region are so popular among lovers of both drip coffee and modern espresso. Every sip feels clean, energetic, and layered. The coffee comes from the Kieni wet mill in Nyeri County, located in Kenya’s Central Highlands between the Aberdare Mountains and the slopes of Mount Kenya. The mill is operated by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which brings together approximately 1,000 smallholder farmers. The coffee grows here at an elevation of around 1,700 meters, in a cooler climate and on red volcanic soils that promote slow ripening of the cherries and the development of a distinctive flavor profile. The typical Kenyan varieties SL28 and SL34 contribute to the coffee’s intense flavor and characteristic body.
The washed processing method ensures the purity of the final cup. After being hand-picked, the cherries are stripped of their skins and pulp, and the beans ferment overnight. They are then thoroughly washed and soaked in water, which helps highlight the clarity of the flavors and the typical Kenyan acidity. Drying then takes place slowly on raised beds over the course of several weeks. The result is an elegant and distinctive coffee that fully showcases the character of both the region and the varieties.
