Kenya Gicherori Washed by Friedhats is a coffee with a fruity, juicy, and pleasantly sweet profile. The flavor combines apricot, rhubarb, and brown sugar, creating a blend of fresh fruitiness and a more subtle sweetness. The apricot brings a ripe fruit note, the rhubarb complements it with a more pronounced freshness, and the brown sugar pleasantly rounds out the entire profile. The result is a lively and clean cup in which the fruit has plenty of room to shine, yet is balanced by a sweeter finish. Friedhats roasts this coffee for pour-over, allowing its juicy character to shine through.
The coffee comes from Kenya, specifically the Kibugu area in the Embu region, where it is processed at the Gicherori Factory. The cherries are supplied by 1,062 small-scale farmers united in the Kibugu Farmer’s Coop, making this a collective production effort by a large number of small growers from the surrounding area. The lot consists of the SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties. SL28 and SL34 are traditional Kenyan varieties and were also selected for their extensive root systems, which help them better withstand drought, while Ruiru 11 offers higher yields and greater disease resistance. The coffee trees grow at an elevation of 1,650 to 1,800 meters, and the company Poma handles the import of this coffee.
The coffee is processed using the washed method. With this method, after harvesting, the skin and pulp are removed from the cherries, and the beans are then washed and dried. This process complements the clean and well-defined character of this coffee, allowing the individual layers of its fruity profile to shine through. When combined with the SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties, the result is a filter coffee that offers not only pronounced freshness but also a pleasant sweetness and a clean finish.
