Costa Rica Don José from the Czech roastery The Naughty Dog is an espresso that first captures your attention with its fruitiness and then treats you to a sweet finish. The flavor profile combines juicy blackberries and ripe plums with a more pronounced acidity, which is gradually softened by cocoa nibs and pralines. This gives the cup a lively, sweet, and layered character, yet it also has enough chocolatey depth to ensure it’s not just about the fruit. It’s an espresso for those moments when you’re in the mood for something more distinctive, juicier, and a bit like dessert.

The beans come from Costa Rica, specifically the Heredia region in the Central Valley, and are sourced from the Brumas del Zurqui Micromill farm. Caturra coffee trees grow here at an elevation of approximately 1,400 to 1,800 meters above sea level. Don José is from the March 2026 harvest, making it a coffee from the current season. The Caturra variety is one of Costa Rica’s long-standing classics, and in this lot, it shines in a purely natural, distinctly fruity profile.

The coffee undergoes a dry processing method. This particular processing method complements its distinctly fruity and sweet character well and helps create a fuller, more layered cup. In Don José, alongside its juicier acidity, a more chocolatey, slightly dessert-like aspect comes to the fore, nicely rounding out the entire espresso. It shines brilliantly both as a black espresso and in milk-based drinks, where notes of pralines and blackberries create a flavor reminiscent of a delicate fruit tart.
