Burundi Ninga Hill from Boo! is a perfect example of why washed Burundian coffees are among the cleanest and juiciest cups in the world. The flavor profile unfolds with notes of lemon candy, blueberries, and ripe plums, which together create a lively, sweet, and elegantly layered profile. The coffee is very clean and bright, with a pronounced yet gently rounded acidity and a light, juicy body. Every sip is fresh, complex, and perfectly balanced. It’s exactly the kind of coffee that makes you want to brew another cup before you’ve even finished the first.
The coffee comes from the Ninga Hill region in the Butanyerera province of Burundi, where it is grown by approximately 741 smallholder farmers at an altitude of 1,800–2,000 meters above sea level. Each producer farms only a very small plot of land, often with just a few dozen Red Bourbon coffee trees. The cherries are then sent to the Ninga Washing Station, operated by the Long Miles Coffee project. Ben and Kristy Carlson founded the project with the goal of showcasing the true potential of Burundian coffee while providing long-term support to local communities. Today, Long Miles helps farmers through education, sustainable farming, and support for women in regions where coffee is the primary source of livelihood.
Processing is carried out using the classic washed method, which maximally highlights the terroir and character of the Red Bourbon variety. After harvesting, the cherries are carefully sorted, pulped, and fermented in water to remove pulp residues and enhance the clarity of the resulting profile. The coffee is then slowly dried under controlled conditions, which helps preserve its bright acidity, sweetness, and complexity. Thanks to the high altitude, cool nights, and precise processing, the result is a cup that is clean, juicy, and elegant. A beautiful example of just how exceptional washed Burundi can taste.
