Kenya Wamuguma AA from the Slovak roasters Concept Coffee Roasters is exactly the kind of Kenyan coffee you’d expect from this roaster. An explosive lime flavor is accompanied by sweet, ripe blueberries, followed by deep notes of black currant jam. If you let the cup cool for a moment, it transitions from a sparkling acidity to a pleasant, silky aftertaste of maple syrup. Wamuguma AA is a complex, juicy, and beautifully layered coffee.
Wamuguma AA comes from the Kiambu region of Kenya, specifically the Gatundu area, where the Wamuguma processing station is located. The station processes coffee cherries from approximately 980 smallholder farmers in the surrounding area. The station is part of the Ritho Farmers Cooperative Society, which has been in operation since 1972 and has more than 2,500 active members. The area is characterized by fertile red soils and mountainous conditions, which create an ideal environment for the slower ripening of the cherries and the development of a more complex flavor profile. Another interesting fact is the name “Wamuguma” itself, which refers to a local dignitary named Mugumu, who was known for his support of the local coffee community.
This lot consists of the SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 varieties, which are among the most typical varieties grown in Kenya. SL28 is prized primarily for its high cup quality, pronounced fruitiness, and lively acidity, while SL34 adapts well to various altitudes and conditions and is also known for its high productivity. The coffee underwent a washed processing method with double fermentation. After the pulp is removed, the beans first undergo dry fermentation overnight, are then washed in sorting channels, soaked in clean water for another 24 to 48 hours, and finally dried on raised African beds. It is precisely this meticulous process that helps preserve the clean, juicy, and distinctly structured character of the resulting cup.
