The Prague-based roastery Candycane Coffee is releasing another limited-edition coffee—this time, the Guatemala BUENA VISTA GESHA from Fredy Orantes. This elegant natural coffee, with its pronounced sweetness, offers notes of tropical fruit and wildflower honey. The Gesha variety lends the cup a delicate floral character, and together with the high altitude, it creates a complex profile with a clean, long finish. A cupping score of 89 points only underscores the quality of this small lot.
The coffee comes from the Buena Vista farm, where it is grown by producer Fredy Orantes in the Fraijanes region of the Santa Rosa department. Gesha remains a relatively rare variety in Guatemala and requires specific conditions and meticulous care. Fredy therefore focuses on small lots and rigorous monitoring of every step from harvest to processing. This lot was grown at an elevation of 1,870 meters above sea level, where the potential of both the variety and the careful cultivation approach truly shines through.
The natural processing method was chosen. After hand-picking, only perfectly ripe red coffee cherries were selected; these were first washed in water and then spread out on raised African beds. There, they dried in their husks for 25 to 30 days; during cooler and cloudier periods, Fredy turned them daily and dried them only during the warmest part of the day. This slow and carefully controlled drying process helps develop a pronounced sweetness and fruitiness, which, in the cup, complements the Geshi’s floral character and long, clean aftertaste.
