This coffee starts off fruity and finishes so dessert-like that it almost calls for a fork. The Ethiopia Berhanu Kurse from the Brno-based roastery Industra Coffee is a sweet and distinctly fruity pour-over that entices with intense peach notes right from the aroma. In the cup, juicy blueberries and the deeper sweetness of panela—unrefined cane sugar—come to the fore. The long finish reveals a dessert-like note reminiscent of brownies. The result is a full-bodied, sweet, and playful Ethiopian profile, where fresh fruit pleasantly meets a darker sweetness.
Behind this coffee is Berhanu Kurse, who lives in the village of Gotiti in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. He owns approximately 12 hectares of land, most of which is covered with coffee trees, and his children—who farm their own smaller plots—also help him run the farm. Berhanu inherited the land from his parents, and coffee remains the main source of income for the entire family. The lot comes from the Banko Gotiti farm in Yirgacheffe and consists of a blend of native Ethiopian varieties, so a single cup showcases the diverse local genetics.
The coffee undergoes dry processing, during which the harvested cherries are dried whole, keeping the bean enclosed within the fruit for an extended period. This method generally promotes a more pronounced sweetness, a fuller texture, and a more intense fruity character. In Berhanu Kurse’s coffee, this combination translates into juicy fruity notes and a sweeter, dessert-like finish, giving the coffee a rich yet pleasantly approachable profile.
