Ethiopia BANKO CHELBESA from the Dutch roaster Friedhats Coffee is an espresso that beautifully illustrates why washed Ethiopian coffees are among the most popular in the world. In the cup, notes of black tea, white peach, and lemon intertwine to create a light, fresh, and clean flavor profile. The fruity sweetness naturally complements the subtle citrus freshness and tea-like character, making the coffee pleasantly balanced and revealing new flavor nuances with every sip. It is an espresso that captivates with its elegance while retaining the typical character of Ethiopian coffees.
The coffee comes from the Banko Chelbesa area in the Gedeb region of southern Ethiopia, where coffee trees are grown at an elevation of 2,000 to 2,300 meters. It is cultivated by smallholder farmers, whose harvest is processed by EDN Ethiopian Coffee. The high altitude, slower ripening of the coffee cherries, and the long-standing experience of local growers create ideal conditions for producing specialty coffees with a distinctive character. The Gedeb region is among the most highly regarded in Ethiopia and regularly produces coffees that are gaining popularity among roasters and specialty coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
This lot was processed using the washed method, which is the traditional way of processing specialty coffee in Ethiopia. After the pulp is removed, the beans undergo controlled fermentation followed by washing, which helps preserve a clean and well-defined flavor profile. This process highlights the natural character of the origin and the 74110 and 74112 varieties, which are known for their smoothness and distinctive aroma. The result is a light and fresh cup that faithfully reflects the best that washed Ethiopian coffees have to offer.
