Floral elegance, juicy fruit, and a pleasant honeyed sweetness—that’s Colombia El Obraje from OVNI Coffee. In the cup, delicate notes of orange blossoms unfold, complemented by fresh kiwi and a sweetness reminiscent of fruit-flavored jelly candies. The profile is pleasantly rounded out by herbal notes with a hint of honey, which lend the coffee an interesting depth. The result is a clean, distinctly aromatic cup with bright acidity, in which floral, fruity, and sweet notes blend beautifully.
Behind this coffee is Pablo Andrés Guerrero and his family farm, Hacienda El Obraje, located in the Nariño region of Colombia, near the town of Tangua. The farm originally grew grains, but due to rising imports of cheaper grain, Pablo decided to change its focus. In 2000, he planted the first coffee trees there and became one of the pioneers of coffee cultivation in the area. He gradually built his own processing facilities and began experimenting with specialty coffee. A significant milestone came in 2011, when he brought Gesha variety seeds from Panama to the farm. His efforts paid off in 2021, when the washed Gesha from El Obraje won the Colombia Cup of Excellence with a score of 90.61 points.
This lot consists of the Gesha variety, which ripens slowly thanks to the cool mountain climate and soil rich in volcanic ash. The coffee underwent washed processing, which begins with the hand-picking of perfectly ripe cherries and their careful sorting. This is followed by a 30-hour underwater fermentation of the whole cherries, after which the skin and pulp residues are removed. The beans are then slowly dried on raised beds until they reach a moisture content of approximately 9.5 to 11%. This carefully controlled process helps preserve the variety’s pure character and natural complexity.
