Rwanda Mwasa from Respekt Coffee is a prime example of what a clean, meticulously processed African filter coffee can look like, with a focus on detail. In the cup, you’ll find a delicate yet beautifully structured acidity, carrying notes of cherry and pink grapefruit, complemented by a creamy, sweet finish of white chocolate. The result is an elegant, balanced coffee with a light body and a fresh, fruity character that really shines when brewed in a V60 or Aeropress.
The coffee comes from the Mwasa station in the Nyamasheke region of Rwanda’s Western Province, where hundreds of smallholder farmers cultivate coffee. They often carry their cherries on foot from the surrounding hills, which only underscores the challenging local conditions and the immense emphasis on quality. The station collaborates with more than 450 growers and actively supports their education through agronomic programs. Thanks to this, they have been able to continuously improve both the quality of production and the sustainability of farming —from soil management to efficient water use.
Processing is done using the washed method, which is typical for Rwanda and essential for the resulting flavor profile. After being hand-picked, the cherries are de-pulped, fermented, and then washed with clean water. They are then dried on raised African beds, where they are regularly turned to ensure even drying. It is precisely this process that gives the coffee its characteristic clarity, bright acidity, and distinct fruity notes, making Rwanda Mwasa one of the finest examples of modern African filter coffees.
