Kenya Muthuthiini AA from Respekt Coffee is exactly the kind of Kenyan filter coffee that will win you over from the very first sip. The cup is dominated by juicy fruit—distinct blackberry, slightly tart rhubarb, and a sweeter note of ripe apricot. The result is a beautifully lively yet balanced coffee with bright acidity, a clean profile, and a long, refreshing finish typical of high-quality Kenyan coffees. It works great in a V60, but it also holds its own in an Aeropress.
The coffee comes from the Muthuthiini washing station in Kenya’s Nyeriregion, one of the most prestigious coffee-growing regions in Kenya. It lies between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains, where the ideal combination of altitude (1,600–1,900 m above sea level), red volcanic soil, and a stable climate significantly contributes to the quality of these beans. Production is handled by smallholder farmers associated with the station, who grow the SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties —a combination of traditional and modern varieties known for their complexity and resilience.
Processing is carried out using the traditional washed method, which is absolutely essential for Kenya. After hand-picking, the cherries are carefully sorted, pulped, fermented, and then washed with clean water. They are then dried on African beds, where they are turned regularly. This process highlights the clarity, body, and fruity acidity in the cup, allowing notes of blackberries, rhubarb, and apricots to shine with maximum precision and juiciness.
