Fresh summer fruitiness—that’s exactly what this Rwanda from Punkt. coffee is all about. Its flavor combines the juiciness of kiwi, the freshness of orange peel, and the delicacy of green tea. Thanks to the washed processing method, this coffee is pleasantly smooth, clean, and elegant. In short, it’s the ideal choice for everyday drinking, yet its uniqueness will certainly not disappoint you.
The beans come from southern Rwanda, specifically the Kamonyi region. Coffee trees grow here on the slopes above the Nyabarongo River at an elevation of 1,700 to 2,200 meters. The coffee is grown by women who are part of the Women Coffee Extension program, which helps smallholder women farmers gain a stronger foothold in Rwanda’s coffee sector and improve conditions for their families and farms. The program was founded in 2018 and today brings together up to 700 women farmers. As part of the project, the women also receive training in coffee cultivation, family nutrition, household planning, and support for small-scale farming. Thanks to improved conditions for local residents, the coffee trees tended by the women farmers are also thriving. The coffee cherries are then processed at the Mbizi Washing Station. The Red Bourbon variety is among the most popular Arabica varieties, and for good reason. It offers sweetness and freshness and is very characteristic of Rwanda. It thrives best at higher altitudes, where it can ripen longer, which positively impacts the quality of the final coffee.
After harvesting, the cherries undergo several stages of sorting and are then processed using the classic washed method, during which both the skin and pulp are removed. The coffee is then dried for two to three weeks on raised African drying beds, where it acquires its characteristic clarity and balance. Then it’s off into bags and out into the world.
