This coffee is a pleasure alone. Rwanda Akagere Ikizere by Von&Vonnie is a naturally processed Red Bourbon from the Akagera region in the north-east of Rwanda. It offers you a sweet, juicy and distinctly fruity taste - ideal for both filter and espresso. Look forward to notes of caramel, strawberries and tropical fruits that combine beautifully in the cup to leave a long, clean impression. A very light roast (Agtron 93) enhances the fruity character and natural sweetness of each bean.
31 women, 31 stories! Behind this coffee is not one producer - but 31 small farmers who grow coffee with incredible care on their tiny plots. Some of them have only a few dozen coffee trees, like Marie Mukandaheranwa, who farms just 50 trees. Thanks to the efforts of importer Semillo and local processing station owner Emanuel, they have been able to fully track down these micro-plots and ensure that each of these women receives a fair reward. This is also why the coffee is called Ikizere, which means hope in Rwanda .
The natural processing of this coffee is thorough and time-consuming - and it shows in the taste. First, the cherries are hand-sorted and immersed in water to separate out the best quality ones. These are then fermented in the skin for 12 hours to release the sweet flesh. Drying on African beds takes place over a period of approximately 50 days - for the first 5 days the coffee is turned every hour, then every two. After 30 days it is covered and dried under a tarp. Finally, the coffee is dehusked, optically graded and prepared for export. The result is a cup full of life, balance and stories worth savouring.
