This Peruvian coffee proves that an espresso can be sweet, smooth, and pleasantly refreshing all at once. Peru Mestiza from the Czech roaster Oh My Bean has a harmonious and refined character, but it’s definitely not boring. Notes of plum, baked apple, and milk chocolate gradually emerge in the cup, complemented by a light citrus acidity. The fruitiness doesn’t overpower the coffee’s sweeter side; on the contrary, it blends pleasantly with it to create a balanced profile with a smooth body. It’s an espresso with enough sweetness for a relaxing everyday cup, yet it retains its freshness and the distinct clarity of its individual flavors.
Behind this coffee are female producers involved in the Mestiza Mujeres project from the Callayuc region of Peru, who collaborate within the Cooperativa Agraria Aromas del Valle. The project focuses on supporting women working in the coffee sector, their education, the sharing of experiences, and greater economic independence. The coffee trees grow at altitudes of approximately 1,600 to 2,350 meters above sea level, and this lot consists of the Caturra, Typica, Bourbon, and Pache varieties. It is precisely the combination of several traditional varieties and high-altitude production that creates a rich foundation for the final cup, where fruity freshness meets a subtle sweetness.
The coffee underwent washed processing. After harvest, the skin and pulp are removed from the coffee cherries, and the beans are then fermented to release the remaining mucilage layer from their surface. They are then washed with clean water and moved on to drying. The washed method generally highlights the clarity and distinctiveness of the flavor profile, as the beans do not remain in prolonged contact with the entire pulp during processing. In the case of Peru Mestiza, this fits well with the coffee’s overall character, where, alongside the sweetness of milk chocolate, clearly recognizable notes of plum, baked apple, and a light citrus freshness remain.
