The Bonita Springs farm is located in the Boquete region of Panama, in the Chiriquí area, in the shadow of the active Barú volcano. This unique location allows for the production of an exceptional flavor profile that you won’t find just anywhere else. Behind the farm are the Miró and Olmedo families, who in 2017 transformed a traditional “grow and sell” farm into a specialized enterprise focused on producing top-tier specialty coffees. The farm includes its own workshop, where cherries are dried and processed under the supervision of experts. Today, the farm cultivates over 20 hectares of Caturra and Catuaí varieties, complemented by old orange and citrus trees, and another 10 hectares of carefully selected varieties such as Pacamara, SL28, Laurina, and Wush Wush. Our partnership with Poppy Beans has been going on for 5 years and is a direct trade, meaning we buy directly from the farmer without intermediaries.
The SL28 variety originally comes from Kenya, where it was bred for its exceptional flavor profile. Despite its susceptibility to coffee rust, however, it has begun to spread to Latin America in recent years, where the local microclimate takes it to a new level. At the Bonita Springs farm, located at an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level, the SL28 variety finds ideal conditions for slow ripening and the development of its characteristic fruitiness. Natural processing further enhances the fruit’s natural sweetness and intensity. Farmers dry the cherries whole, including the pulp and skin, allowing the beans to absorb the maximum of these flavors.
