Habtamu Danche from Prodigal Coffee is a washed Ethiopian coffee that comes across as fresh, sweet, and fragrant in the cup. Expect ripe apricot, a hint of pineapple, and jasmine floral notes that lend the entire profile lightness and elegance. The apricot brings a rounded, fruity sweetness; the pineapple pleasantly brightens the coffee; and the jasmine finish shifts it toward a more delicate, floral profile.
The coffee comes from Ethiopia, specifically the Danche area in the southern part of the country within the Yirgacheffe region. Behind this lot is producer and exporter Habtamu Fikadu Aga. His company, Kuri Mountain Coffee, was founded in 2015, but the family’s coffee story dates back to 1945. The coffee cherries for this lot arrive at the processing mill from many local farmers, whose farms collectively cover hundreds of hectares. It is the combination of experience, a high-quality harvest, and the Ethiopian terroir that gives this coffee its sweet, aromatic, and clean character.
The variety is Heirloom, meaning local Ethiopian varieties that possess great genetic diversity and often feature floral, fruity, and tea-like notes. The coffee is processed using the washed method. After harvest, the ripe cherries are first carefully sorted, then hulled, fermented, washed, and finally dried on raised beds. It is precisely this washed method that helps preserve the purity, clarity, and elegant structure of the cup. In Habtamu Danche, this method beautifully brings out the sweetness of apricots, the juiciness of pineapple, and a delicate jasmine finish. The result is a coffee that feels clean, light, and very pleasant.
