Ethiopia BASHA BEKELE from Coffee Collective is a coffee that takes the best of the typical Ethiopian profile and adds something extra. Juicy cherry and fragrant violet carry the fruity-floral theme, while dark chocolate adds a touch of depth and a sweeter contrast. It’s a pour-over that smells wonderful, delights from the very first sip, and has a slightly darker twist than you might expect from an Ethiopian coffee.
Behind this coffee is Basha Bekele, a producer from the Bensa area in the Sidama region, who grew up in a family with a long history of coffee farming. Today, he works not only with his own coffee trees but also with cherries from neighboring smallholder farmers, and he operates several processing facilities. His work garnered significant attention in 2024, when another of his lots took first place in the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence. The 74-158 Kurume coffee trees grow here at approximately 2,200 meters above sea level, giving the entire lot its characteristic high-altitude profile and plenty of room for more delicate aromas.
The coffee is processed using the natural method, in which ripe coffee cherries are dried whole, along with their pulp. The beans thus remain in contact with the fruit for a longer period during drying, which often gives natural coffees a more intense and fuller character. In Basha, this distinctiveness meets a deeper chocolate note, which gives the entire cup a slightly unexpected twist.
