Burundi GITWE HILL from Square Mile is a light roast coffee designed for pour-over. Its flavor profile features blackberries, orange blossom, and grapes, so expect a juicy, sweet, and distinctly fruity cup with a subtle floral note. It’s a coffee that feels fresh and lively, yet clean and elegant.
The coffee comes from the Kayanza region of Burundi and is closely linked to the Heza washing station, operated by our partner organization Long Miles. They have been working with local farmers for a long time, helping them improve coffee quality right on the ground. Gitwe Hill, however, is a bit special in their lineup. It’s not just a community lot from nearby producers, but the first sample of coffee from a new farm that Long Miles is building on the slopes of GitweHill, toweringdirectly above Heza. Behind Gitwe Hill lies Long Miles’ broader work in Burundi, including the Coffee Scouts program. This program consists of young Burundians who live among farmers and help them address coffee quality, soil health, climate change, and the risk of the so-called potato defect.
The coffee is made from the Bourbon variety, an Arabica typical of Burundi, which often brings sweetness, a round body, and clean fruitiness to the cup. Processing is done using the washed method, which helps keep the flavor profile clean, bright, and distinct. It is precisely thanks to the washed process that the juiciness of blackberries, the light citrus-floral aroma of orange blossom, and the sweet impression of grapes stand out. The result is not a heavy, fermented fruitiness, but rather an elegant, fresh, and sweetly sparkling filter coffee.
