Kenya Gatura from the London-based roastery Square Mile is exactly the kind of coffee that reminds you why classic Kenyan pour-overs are so addictive. In the cup, you’ll find pronounced black currant, delicate elderflower, and plenty of juiciness. The fruity profile comes across as sweet, almost jam-like, but thanks to its lively freshness, the coffee remains light and energetic. The result is a bold, clean, and beautifully juicy pour-over for anyone who appreciates the characteristic fruitiness of coffees from central Kenya.

The coffee comes from the Mukurweini area in Kenya’s Nyeri region, on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. The Gatura processing station is managed by the Gatura Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which brings together approximately 1,000 smallholder farmers. During harvest, they hand-pick only ripe cherries and bring them in for collective processing. This lot consists of the Batian, Ruiru 11, SL28, and SL34 varieties, among which you’ll find traditional Kenyan varieties known for their pronounced fruitiness and juicy acidity.

Upon arrival at the station, the cherries are carefully sorted again, and unripe or damaged fruits are removed. The skin and pulp are then removed, and the beans undergo fermentation. Afterward, they are thoroughly washed in clean water and soaked once more, which is a traditional part of the local washed processing method. This step helps ensure the purity of the final cup while also making the work easier during the peak of the harvest. Finally, the coffee is spread evenly on raised beds and dried slowly. The result is a beautifully clean profile in which currant fruitiness, floral notes, and typical Kenyan juiciness shine through.
