Juicy, elegant, and beautifully complex—that’s this Kenyan coffee from Cafēn. Nginda Washed embodies exactly what we love about Kenyan coffees. The flavor profile blends black and red currants with floral notes of rosehip and hibiscus, complemented by honeyed sweetness and tropical fruit. The result is a clean, fresh, and distinctive cup with pleasant fruitiness, a subtle floral note, and a refreshing finish. The coffee is roasted as an omni roast, so you can enjoy it both as a pour-over and as an espresso.
The coffee comes from the Nginda Estate in the Kibugu region of Embu, Kenya, and is produced by the Ndwiga family. The coffee trees here grow at an elevation of 1,795 meters above sea level, and this single-origin lot consists of the traditional Kenyan varieties SL28 and SL34. Cafēn acquired the coffee through its Kenya Sourcing Project, which focuses on directly sourced Kenyan coffees and single lots from individual farms, trees, or varieties. Producer Peter Mbature from Kamavindi helped establish the connection with the Ndwiga family and also played a role in guiding the processing method.
After harvest, the ripe cherries were carefully sorted, and lower-quality fruits were separated through flotation. This was followed by the removal of the skin and pulp, leaving a layer of mucilage on the bean. The coffee then underwent controlled fermentation to break down the remaining mucilage; it was subsequently thoroughly washed with clean water and sorted. Finally, the coffee was slowly sun-dried on raised beds. During drying, it was regularly turned and inspected to ensure that moisture content decreased evenly and gradually.
