This Indonesian Asman Arianto captivates with its unusually clean and elegant flavor profile. In the cup, notes of cherries, cranberries, and dried cantaloupe come together, complemented by a sweetness reminiscent of cane sugar. The aroma of the ground coffee is floral and slightly spicy. A pleasantly rounded citrus acidity of medium intensity combines with a tea-like lightness and a long, sweet aftertaste. This is an annual staple at the Poppy Beans roastery in Brno and will delight lovers of harmonious, fruit-forward filter coffees.
The coffee comes from the Pegasing area near the town of Takengon in the Aceh region of Sumatra. The Asman Gayo processing station is operated here by Asman Arianto, winner of the Cup of Excellence competition. He collaborates with small-scale farmers from the villages of Pantan Musara, who were forced to leave their homes and land following a natural disaster. They have gradually rebuilt their farms and focused on producing higher-quality coffee. At an elevation of 1,300–1,650 meters, the Ateng, Catimor, Bor Bor, and Timor varieties are grown here. The coffee trees are cultivated on volcanic soil in the middle of the rainforest. Coffee production in this region is characterized by small family farms. The average farm is approximately one hectare in size; 95% of producers are smallholder farmers, and approximately 80% of growers are women.
This lot is processed using the dry method. In addition to traditional methods, the Asman Gayo station specializes in natural and washed processing, which is less common in the local humid climate. This coffee showcases Sumatra through its clean, fruity profile, smoothness, and pleasant sweetness.
