Strawberry ice cream, pineapple juice, and raspberries. Sugar Rush by Boo! certainly doesn’t hold back with its name, and this Colombian coffee is exactly as juicy, sweet, and bold as it promises to be. Its ripe fruitiness is complemented by a fresh raspberry tartness and a delicate floral note that lends the entire coffee a sense of lightness. The result is an intense yet clean and elegant cup where tropical fruit meets a creamier body.
The coffee comes from the El Rubí farm in the San Adolfo area of Colombia’s Huila region, where it grows at an elevation of 1, 900 meters. The farm is run by Wilder Lazo, along with Segundo Lazo and Heiner Lass. Wilder originally studied veterinary medicine and fully transitioned to coffee in 2016. On the farm, he began employing more precise soil management techniques, including soil analysis, pH testing, and plant nutrition. It is here that just 1,200 trees of the Sidamo Heirloom variety—from which this lot originates—are currently grown.
Sidamo Heirloom has a rather unusual story at El Rubí. Wilder, together with exporter Nikolai Fürst, managed to germinate a sample of green Ethiopian coffee and subsequently plant it in Colombia. After a selective harvest of ripe cherries, the coffee is processed using the natural method. The whole cherries are slowly dried for approximately 14 days in shaded marquesinas and turned regularly. This processing further enhances the coffee’s sweetness and tropical fruitiness, while the variety retains its floral notes and clarity.
