Concept Coffee Roasters presents its limited edition Valentine's Day blend, Concept of Love, which is based on the Pink Bourbon variety and makes a strong, sweet, and elegant impression from the very first sip. The cup reveals notes of dried strawberries and cherries in chocolate, complemented by delicate vanilla, a hint of amaretto, and a creamy white chocolate finish. The overall impression is full-bodied, smooth, and at the same time very playful. The sweetness is pronounced but not heavy, the acidity is smooth, and the flavor holds together beautifully. The coffee is sensual and fun, just as a Valentine's Day edition should be.

The coffee comes from Colombia, specifically from the El Vergel farm in the Tolima region, run by brothers Elias and Shady Bayter. Their journey began in the mid-1990s and has gradually developed into one of the most respected projects in the field of specialty coffee in Colombia. Today, El Vergel functions not only as a farm, but also as a center for experimentation, education, and collaboration with other producers. Pink Bourbon grows here at an altitude of 1,400-1,600 meters above sea level, where the slower ripening of the cherries promotes a higher concentration of sugars and a more complex flavor profile. The Bayter Brothers' emphasis on transparency and quality is evident in every lot.

The processing combines carbonic maceration and the honey method. After careful selective harvesting, the cherries first undergo 36 hours of aerobic pre-fermentation, which kick-starts the aromatic profile. This is followed by 72 hours of carbonic maceration in a CO₂-enriched environment, which enhances the fruitiness and sweetness. After fermentation, the coffee is mechanically dried for approximately 120 hours and then stabilized for 30 days in GrainPro bags to round out and blend the flavors. The result is a coffee with high purity, distinctive aromatics, and a very pleasant structure, confirming why El Vergel is considered the pinnacle of Colombian experimental production.

This one was a real disappointment.

From the first grind, the coffee gives off an intensely perfumed, almost artificial aroma. Instead of a clean, expressive fragrance you’d expect from a special release, it feels overwhelming and intrusive, like scented flavoring than something inherent to the bean.
That wouldn’t be as big of an issue if it stayed in the cup, but it doesn’t. The scent lingers aggressively in the grinder, to the point where it contaminates subsequent coffees. It takes multiple purges to get rid of it, which is not something you want from any coffee, let alone a premium, limited edition. In the cup, the profile follows through on that same note: loud, dominant, and lacking balance. Whatever origin character or nuance might be there is completely overshadowed. It doesn’t come across as complex. Just overpowering.
For something positioned as a special Valentine’s release, this misses the mark. Instead of refined or memorable, it ends up feeling heavy-handed and unpleasant to work with. Definitely not something I’d buy again.

The taste and smell are incredibly strong and artificial. I couldn't finish it at all. I really don't recommend it.

Like a fruity perfume
The strawberry and vanilla flavors aren't as intense anymore
I'll have to run some salt and regular coffee through the grinder next, otherwise the smell will linger
