Strawberries, blueberry jam, and lemon verbena. This juicy combination is brought to you by the Ethiopian Bombe Natural from the Dutch roaster Friedhats. The sweetness of ripe strawberries is complemented by the richer notes of blueberry jam, while lemon verbena adds a subtle citrusy and herbal touch. As a result, the coffee isn’t just sweet and fruity—it also has a pleasantly refreshing finish. When brewed with a filter, it offers a distinctive yet pleasantly balanced flavor profile.
The beans come from Ethiopia, specifically from Shantawene in the Bensa area, which is located in the Sidama region. Coffee trees here grow at an elevation of 2, 000 to 2,200 meters. Such high-altitude growing areas are typically associated with slower ripening of coffee cherries, which allows their flavor characteristics to develop gradually. It is precisely this high altitude that is one of the factors contributing to the characteristic diversity of Ethiopian coffees. Primavera handles the import of this lot.
This lot consists of two Ethiopian varieties, 74110 and 74112, which were bred in the 1970s from native Ethiopian coffee trees. Both are notable primarily for their resistance to coffee cherry disease and are also prized for their flavor potential. The coffee underwent natural processing, in which the harvested cherries are dried whole, including the skin and pulp. The beans thus remain in contact with the fruit during drying, which can enhance their sweetness and give them a fuller, fruitier character. In Bombe, these characteristics are particularly evident in notes of strawberries and blueberry jam, which are pleasantly lightened by a fresh, herbal hint of verbena.
