This Ecuadorian coffee fromthe Czech roastery Poppy Beans in Brno is a filter coffee that tastes smooth, sweet, and very elegant, yet retains enough juiciness to keep the cup from feeling dull. The flavor opens with nectarine, candied orange , and citrus, so the profile is built on stone fruit sweetness, a delicate sugary orange note, and fresh citrus energy. The overall impression is clean, floral, and balanced, with a lightness that doesn’t veer into emptiness. It is a coffee that comes across as smooth and very focused, with a profile that relies most heavily on sweetness and delicate aromatics. Poppy Beans classifies it as a filter coffee, and that’s exactly where this lot makes the most sense, as its fresh and elegant character shines best in a cleaner preparation.

The coffee comes from Ecuador, from the Pichincha region , specifically from the Nanegal area on the western slopes of the Andes. Behind the Finca Maputo farm are Henry Gaibor and Verena Blaser, who are developing it with an emphasis on precision, detail, and long-term quality improvement. The farm is situated in a cloud forest environment—a high-altitude misty forest with high humidity, stable temperatures, and lush vegetation. It is precisely this microclimate, combined with volcanic soil, that creates excellent conditions for the slower ripening of the cherries and the development of complex flavors. Today, Finca Maputo is one of the leading names in Ecuadorian specialty coffee and is known for working with multiple varieties and various processing experiments. In addition to this lot, the farm also grows Sidra, Caturra, Typica Mejorado, and SL-28, which clearly demonstrates how comprehensively and meticulously the entire operation is managed.

The coffee is washed-processed, which gives it the clarity and delicate floral character that is so important to it. Washed processing clearly highlights the nectarine sweetness, candied orange, and citrus freshness here, without unnecessarily complicating the cup with fermentation notes. Thanks to this, the entire coffee comes across as very transparent and elegant, with a clean profile and a pleasantly balanced aftertaste. It is a filter coffee that demonstrates just how well the combination of cloud forest terroir, precise farming practices, and washed processing can work in the cup. The result is a coffee that is sweet, delicately floral, and refreshing, yet still distinctive enough to be enjoyable even when sipped with greater concentration.
