Join us on a journey to Kenya, specifically to the Kirinyaga region , home to coffee with a truly exceptional character. The Barn presents the Kiunyu PB lot, a "peaberry" – a rare mutation where only one round bean forms inside the cherry instead of two. In the cup, you can expect a clean and aromatic profile with notes of cranberries, blackberries, and black tea. Delicate citrus and orange blossom add elegance, while the vanilla finish brings a subtle smoothness. This lot is made up of the famous Kenyan varieties SL 28 and SL 34, which give the coffee its renowned complexity and bright character.
Behind this lot is the Kiunyu Farmers Cooperative, which brings together hundreds of small farmers with approximately 250–350 coffee trees per farm. In collaboration with export partner Sucafina, growers have access to modern technology and agronomic advice, which improves tree health and harvest quality. Each cherry is picked by hand and delivered to the Kiunyu washing station, where a rigorous selection process takes place – only the densest and ripest fruits are sent on for processing.
This is followed by the traditional washed method used in Kenya. After being peeled, the cherries are left to ferment, then thoroughly washed with clean water and slowly dried on raised beds. The parchment is turned regularly to dry evenly and protected from excessive sun and nighttime humidity. This careful process is why Kenyan coffees are renowned for their bright acidity, purity, and complexity, which make every cup an unforgettable experience.
