Nordbeans’limited-edition summer blend, “Funky Saur,” in its espresso version, is a coffee that definitely isn’t afraid to make a statement. In the cup, the sweetness of tropical fruit meets the smoothness of cocoa beans and ripe raspberries. Expect a sweet, fruity, and slightly fermented espresso with a rich body and medium acidity. The body is rich, the flavor is bold, and the overall impression is playful, sweet, and, above all, seriously funky. This is the coffee for those moments when you don’t want anything boring—you want a coffee that’s full of energy and will put you in a summer mood.
The coffee comes from Uganda, specifically the Western Uganda region, and more precisely from the Kasese area. Processing takes place at the Mubuku CSW station, located on the banks of the Mubuku River. Cherries are supplied here by more than 4,300 smallholder farmers from surrounding farms, where coffee trees are often grown alongside bananas, vanilla, or beans. The station is situated between Queen Elizabeth and Rwenzori National Parks, in a warmer and drier climate that provides ideal conditions for experimenting with processing methods. Thanks to its own laboratory and modern wet mill, Mubuku is able to maintain a very consistent level of quality.
The variety is SL14, whose coffee trees grow here at an elevation of around 1,300 meters above sea level. The processing method is anaerobic natural, meaning controlled fermentation of whole coffee cherries without oxygen. After harvest, the cherries are washed in water, sorted by hand, and placed in barrels, which are then sealed. They ferment there for 40 hours, then are spread out on African beds and dried for several days. During drying, the cherries are regularly turned and checked to ensure they dry evenly and do not over-ferment. It is precisely this process that gives Funkysaur its full body, tropical fruitiness, juicy sweetness, and a slightly wilder summer character.
