This Rwanda coffee from the Slovak roastery LOT.roastery in Bratislava has a clean, juicy, and very elegant profile. The flavor blends notes of cranberry, cola, lime, and caramel, giving the cup a fresh, fruity start, a subtle citrusy energy, and a sweeter, smooth finish. This isn’t a coffee that goes for shock value at any cost. Instead, it focuses on precision, clarity, and a pleasantly lively profile that works great in a pour-over and doesn’t get lost even as a modern espresso. The result is a cup that’s distinctive yet still very drinkable, with bright acidity and a sweetness that ties it all together nicely.
The coffee comes from Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District in the Western Province, and its heart lies at the Kirambo processing station on the shores of Lake Kivu. The station has been in operation since 2008, but the real turning point came in 2017, when RTC took it over and brought more stable infrastructure, investment, and training for local farmers to the region. This is precisely what helped the entire area improve both the quality and long-term sustainability of its production. The variety is Red Bourbon, and the coffee trees grow at an elevation of 1,545 meters, which translates into a clean, pleasantly lively profile in the final cup.
The coffee is washed-processed, which is precisely what gives it its characteristic clarity and elegance. After harvest, the cherries undergo flotation to separate high-quality beans from defective ones; they are then hulled and dried on raised African beds. There, they lie in a thin layer for about 30 days, are regularly turned by hand, and are protected from dew at night. The result is a coffee with a clean profile, sparkling acidity, and a sweet, balanced finish, which clearly demonstrates just how appealing a classically processed Rwandan coffee can be.
