Nostalgia in a cup. That's how Slovak roaster Kaan describes its Rwanda GRANDMA'S JAM. This espresso is meant to evoke memories of years spent at grandma's house, full of sweetness, warmth, and, above all, her delicious currant jam. You will also enjoy sweet notes of caramel, a warming hint of black tea and dried fruit in your cup. So make yourself a cup of this coffee and let yourself be transported back to a time when you were running around the yard, basking in the sun and eating your grandmother's currant jam in the pantry.
This coffee comes from the Nyamasheke region of Rwanda, which lies along Lake Kivu and provides excellent conditions for growing coffee – high altitude, fertile soil, and plenty of rainfall. The coffee is grown by small farmers who hand-pick the coffee cherries and take them to the Karambi processing station. Built in 2016, it is the only station that RWACOF, a company specializing in coffee processing, has built from scratch. It processes coffee from more than 1,500 farmers, 66% of whom are women. RWACOF, in collaboration with sustainability organizations, invests in projects that improve farmers' living conditions, such as increasing yields, training, and environmental protection. These efforts also include the installation of solar panels at some stations to reduce carbon emissions and improve waste management.
The coffee has undergone a washed processing method. This involves sorting the coffee cherries after harvesting and removing any poor-quality cherries using water. The husks are then removed and around 80% of the pulp is removed before fermentation, which lasts 10 hours. The beans are then thoroughly washed with clean water and dried on raised drying beds. During drying, the coffee is regularly turned and checked to ensure that it dries evenly. The result is a coffee with a fresh and clean flavor profile, full of fruity and floral notes.
