Imagine sitting on a veranda overlooking the green hills, a cup in your hand and the first sip instantly transports you to the Kenyan landscape. Prodigal Coffee's Kenya Thunguri AA tastes like having a raspberry and cranberry pie and washing it down with a sip of light red wine. It's a coffee that's got pizzazz, but also subtlety. It's fresh, fruity and a little bit frisky - the perfect partner for those times when you want to indulge in something special while staying in the relaxed rhythm of the day.
Sourced from the Thunguri mill, which was established in 1962, it is set in 8 acres of mineral-rich land - at the foot of Mount Kenya and Aberdare, at around 1600 metres above sea level. The mill serves several surrounding villages and has more than 6 800 smallholder farmers working with it as part of a local cooperative organisation. Most of them farm small plots of land with only a few hundred coffee trees, which they look after with care. Thanks to the rapid transport of green coffee immediately after harvesting, the lot retains its exceptional freshness.
Thunguri AA coffee is processed using the traditional washed method, which is a common and proven practice in Kenya. Hand-picked, perfectly ripe cherries are brought to the station where they are mechanically de-skinned the same day. This is followed by fermentation, which takes several hours and during which the residual pulp is removed from the grains. After fermentation, the coffee is thoroughly washed with clean water and then spread out on raised African beds to dry naturally in the sun - a process that takes several days and requires regular turning and careful sorting. Thanks to this careful processing, the coffee retains the high purity of flavour and distinctive acidity that is typical of Kenyan varieties. In addition, the washed method enhances the fruity notes and creates a juicy, lively profile that makes Thunguri AA a true taste experience.
