Rwanda SHYIRA from the Danish roastery La Cabra greets you with a fresh citrus acidity that initially evokes lime zest or grapefruit pulp. This is followed by a sweet undertone of white sugar and a complex floral aroma with an almost intoxicating depth. In the cup, you’ll find notes reminiscent of nutmeg, dried flowers, or the light scent of a blooming meadow. This is an elegant yet distinctive coffee that perfectly captures the potential of Rwanda’s high-altitude terroir. This lot is available in a Steeped Coffee pouch, allowing you to easily prepare this specialty coffee anywhere without the need for additional equipment.
The coffee comes from the Shyira station, the highest-altitude station in the entire Muraho Trading Co. producer portfolio, located in the northern district of Nyabihu. This location, with its volcanic soil, cool mountain climate, and slowly ripening cherries, produces exceptionally sweet and flavor-rich beans. Muraho is led by brothers Gaudam and Carthick Anbalagan, who returned to their native Rwanda after years living in New Zealand with the goal of contributing to its reconstruction. Since 2016, they have been successfully pushing the boundaries of production. They were the first to begin exporting naturally processed coffees from Rwanda, and last year they also began exporting varieties other than Bourbon. They have been collaborating with La Cabra for five years now, and the lots from Shyira are among the most popular.
This coffee was processed using the washed method, in which the coffee cherries are stripped of their skin and mucilage through fermentation, mechanical rubbing, and water. The beans are thus cleaned down to the parchment layer, which allows the clarity of the cup and the delicate flavor notes that developed directly within the seed during ripening to shine through. Although the Shyira station is the smallest of all Muraho operations, its remote location allows for deeper and more focused collaboration with local farmers, which is reflected not only in the approach but also in the quality of each lot. The ground coffee is also packaged in Steeped Coffee bags with a nitrogen atmosphere, which helps preserve its aroma and flavor profile over the long term. Simply pour hot water over it and enjoy specialty coffee in just a few minutes without needing any additional equipment.
