El Oromazo is a Colombian coffee from the Danish roaster La Cabra, offering a perfectly balanced profile in the cup, full of citrusy freshness, the sweetness of dried fruit, and complex notes of apples and grapes. It comes from northern Tolima, a region with a remarkable history that runs deep into the roots of the local community. A coffee that is clean, bright, and compelling, yet there is much more to it than one might expect at first glance.
This coffee carries a truly exceptional story. In 2015, a mining company claimed the rights to industrial gold mining in the municipality of El Oromazo in northern Tolima. Local coffee growers, who foresaw environmental destruction and devastating impacts on their communities from mining in the region, gathered in Casabianca and decided to take action. They blocked the access road and made it clear to the company that it was not welcome there. This protest gave rise to the CDNT cooperative and, with it, the LaREB collective—now long-term partners of La Cabra—which brings together dozens of small-scale farmers from across the region. El Oromazo is thus a coffee that reminds us with every sip that quality and community go hand in hand.
The Caturra and Castillo varieties undergo traditional washed processing here, which plays a key role in northern Tolima in preserving the purity and natural brightness of the profile. After the ripe cherries are hand-harvested, the fruit is pulped and the beans ferment in water tanks; they are then thoroughly washed with fresh water and slowly dried on raised beds. The result is a cup that perfectly reflects the terroir of the place from which it comes.
