The Karimikui washing station is located in the Kirinyaga region of Mount Kenya's southern highlands, where the red volcanic soil and good rainfall distribution provide a favorable environment for coffee cultivation. This washing station has been in operation for over 50 years and currently receives coffee cherries from approximately 2,200 small growers. The region is dominated by SL28, SL34 and Batian varieties, which are grown on small farms with an average size of 0.1 hectare. These small farms are located in the villages of Gituba and Kithure, which are located at an altitude of 1600 to 1700 m above sea level. Most of these farmers also grow tea on the same farms. They raise livestock for food and organic fertilizers that they use on crops.
In the washed method, the cherries are first passed through a peeler, which removes both the skin and the pulp. The remaining green grains with the remains of the pulp are then fermented for several hours to more easily separate the remaining pulp. After fermentation, the grains are washed with water to remove sugar residues. The coffee is then dried in the sun on concrete surfaces or raised beds. In some cases, mechanical dryers are used if outdoor conditions are not suitable. The resulting coffee processed by this method has a cleaner taste, higher acidity and pronounced fruity notes.
