OXO Rapid Brewer - Travel Coffee Maker
Top-quality craftsmanship, sturdy construction; the material looks very durable and high-quality
Easy to use and consistent results—the recipe works well for hot brew; you just need to fine-tune the grind size (ideally so that the coffee drips only slightly during those 2 minutes and the water level in the reservoir doesn’t drop much), for cold brew, 40 g of coffee seems like way too much given the amount of water, so I used 20 g instead, ground it a bit finer, and extended the extraction time (7–10 min., though I’m still fine-tuning that), and the result wasn’t bad
From those 160 ml of water, you’ll get about 130 ml of concentrate, but diluting it 1:2 or, heaven forbid, 1:3 is crazy in my opinion—it would be like drinking soup. I’ve found that topping it off to about 300 ml works best for me (based on my taste, using the V60 as my benchmark).
Compared to the V60, the flavor is more subtle; it doesn’t bring out the sharpest or most delicate flavors, but that isn’t always a bad thing (for example, some light washed coffees might be “boring,” whereas fuller-bodied naturals are much more drinkable in my opinion, but it depends on personal preference)
It'll be great for traveling, even though it's not exactly tiny—you can pour water from just about anything, and it doesn't even have to be hot; the 160-ml mark works reliably, and if you measure out and grind your coffee at home, you can do without a scale or grinder entirely
I have to give credit to how clean this coffee-making process is—the only thing that gets dirty is the coffee container, from which you just tap out the “puck” at the end, just like with a coffee maker (provided you packed the grounds down properly at the start). All you have to do is wipe it down and let the rest air dry—easy peasy
I was worried about the metal filter—I didn't want the coffee to have fine grounds in it—but fortunately, that didn't happen. The coffee is beautifully clear, so thumbs up for that (just make sure to stop pumping as soon as you hear the hissing sound).
It's relatively large for traveling, but since, in theory, you don't need a stove, a grinder, or a scale, it's fine
It would be helpful to have at least some kind of fabric pouch for transport—when folded, the cup is simply placed on top of the coffee maker, and when you press down on it, the pump’s piston tends to disengage and lift up
If you don't have a high-quality grinder, you'll struggle to get a fine grind (with my basic 1ZPresso, I really have to work hard with harder beans, and my wife can't grind them at all; the older 1ZPresso with a pentagonal burr does a better job, but it's still a lot of work)
