No pencil batteries are needed, the scale has an integrated battery, which you charge with a USB cable. The Acaia Lunar scale also has an automatic mode, where the timer starts itself and you can accurately measure the extraction of your coffee. It also has Bluetooth, with which you can pair the scale with your phone and applications directly from Acaia.
