About Roastopus

Roastopus is a young Hungarian roastery of speciality coffee. It was founded in 2017 by Balázs Bako who wanted to learn more about the coffee processes and was most intrigued by roasting. He started his first attempt at home with a hand-made popcorn machine. The results were not dazzling, but the passion for roasting and watching every grain change captivated him so much that he intended to continue.

He was later joined by Gabi Horváth, who helped start the company. For the next few months, they tested, cupped, and bought mountains of green coffee beans. It was not until January 2019 that they released the first batch of coffee. They knew that they wanted their coffee to stand out not only for its great taste but also for its design. Thanks to this, a collaboration was created with the artist and graphic designer Miklós Kiss, who helped them design the logo and packaging.

Can you introduce your roastery in a couple of sentences?

Roastopus is a roaster of speciality coffee in Kaposvár, Hungary- offering a wide range of coffees with unique flavours.

What's the story behind your logo?

The logo was created by Miklos Kiss (graphic designer). The octopus is symbolic of the modern and entertaining barista.

What's the hardest part about running a roastery?

Probably the hardest part is maintaining a healthy caffeine intake.

What is one thing that people still don't get about coffee?

The added value. The amount of careful work of many hands from plantation to cup.

What is one thing would you like to do differently if you got to start all over again?

We wouldn't change anything because we like it the way it is.

Whose one person in the industry that people should know about?

We think that everyone involved in the coffee adventure deserves praise and attention.

What has been your biggest success thus far?

That they were unable to start in December 2018. Due to one small USB interface that did not want to communicate with the roaster.

What are you most proud of?

We are really proud of our collaboration as a team, without which Roastopus would not exist.

What will the speciality coffee market look like in 2025?

The range will be extended and new and simpler methods of brewing coffee at home will be made available.

Tell us about "the cup" - the best cup of coffee you've ever tasted?

We can't be unbiased, but the greatest experience was when we tasted the first sip of espresso from our own natural Ethiopia.

The taste is typically more pleasantly sour, as coffee lovers from Kenya are sure to know
The taste description, in my opinion, fits
It tastes good both on the French press and on the filter (aero press, clever dripper, V60)
