Farm: Finca Josefina

Finca Josefina is owned by Leopoldo Andrade and his brother. Their two farms are located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The project was launched in 2014 for Finca Josefina and in 2016 for the farm Marjorell. Located between 1400 and 1600 meters above sea level, each of the farms covers 19 hectares and cultivates a dozen varieties including the Sudan Rume (the only farms in Ecuador). In the background, you can admire the majestic El Reventador volcano. The varieties grown on these two farms are typica, pacamara, java, sidra, yellow and orange bourbon, catuai and geisha. For the moment only the varieties typica and pacamara produce.

Farmer: Leopoldo Andrade

Leopoldo Andrade Barragan initiated and planned this farm creation project. Before he worked for 30 years in the banking sector. In 2014, with his wife Ligia Merizalde they get into this agricultural project with three objectives in mind:to have their own companyto be part of the environmental landscape of specialty coffee production in Ecuadorto produce a sustainable coffee sustainable (socially and  environmentally). Today the project is 8 years old and coffee has become a real passion for Leopoldo and linking his daily life with the future of an agricultural activity is very enriching. With the help of a dedicated technical team, Leopoldo supervises all the processes and participates each year in numerous national and international coffee competitions. Its aim is to position Ecuador as a key player in specialty coffee. As he puts it so well, he is very proud to have created a “coffee community” behind this project. Leopoldo is very interested in market trends. It is for this reason that he innovates, develops new processes and seeks to differentiate his cups. His farm located in the Amazon rainforest offers him a haven of peace in which he wishes to produce high quality coffee while respecting this magical place, lung of the world.

Variety: Typica

Typica is one of the most culturally and genetically important C. arabica coffees in the world. It is well- adapted to cold but very sensitive to coffee diseases. It has proved to have very good quality results in higher altitudes in Central America. The Typica is supposed to have originated in Ethiopia.  In the late eighteenth century, cultivation spread across Central America. Until the 1940s, the majority of coffee plantations in South and Central America were planted with Typica. Because Typica is both low yielding and highly susceptible to major coffee diseases, it has gradually been replaced across much of the Americas, but is still widely planted in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, where it is called Jamaica Blue Mountain.
