Fellow Ode Brew Grinder: An electric ode to X grinding

American company Fellow continues its successful streak of beautiful and functional gadgets. 💖 Fellow Ode became a coffee hit within a few months of its launch, and it's no wonder—in addition to its picturesque minimalist exterior, it also offers precisely adjustable, first-class grinding. And now Fellow is coming out with a new generation that they've been working on for two years!

Compact workhorse with flat burrs

The main magic of Fellow Ode lies in its interior, where 64 mm flat grinding stones are nestled. They are made of extra-durable stainless steel and, in combination with a modern motor that ensures consistent speed, they provide even more uniform grinding of your favorite selection. 💫 You pour the beans into the upper plastic container, which holds up to 100 g of fresh beans. The dominant feature of the entire Ode machine is a large plastic wheel, on which you can set your dream grind with a sensitivity of 31 clicks. 🤏 The ground coffee lands in a cylindrical container attached to the platform with a strong magnet. You can snap on a conical attachment to ensure that the coffee does not fly all over the work surface.

Turn, pour, grind with one click

As is customary with Fellow products, you won't find any unnecessary features with the Ode grinder. 💡 Pour the weighed coffee into the hopper, close the lid, and adjust the grind coarseness. You have a really wide range to choose from, so you can fine-tune the perfect flavor from Aeropress to Chemex. Start grinding by pressing a single button on the device, and that's all you need to do. 🔚 Thanks to a special sensor, the grinder knows when it has finished grinding and switches itself off. Tap the knocker on the right side a few times to knock out the last bits of coffee, and your coffee is ready to go into your pour-over.

A compact helper with an upgrade

Thanks to the absence of a bean container and a cleverly adjusted motor, the Fellow Ode is a very compact helper. 🧚 It won't take up unnecessary space on your counter, and if you don't have room to keep the Ode in the spotlight, at less than 25 cm in height, you can easily store it in a kitchen drawer.
P.S. You may have noticed the Gen. 2 at the beginning. The previous Fellow Ode Brew Grinder models were so successful that they decided to improve the new batch even further. 🆙

The second-generation grinders, designed by Nick Terzulli, Fellow's vice president of research and development and a certified Q Grader (the highest certification in coffee sensory evaluation), grind more finely and accurately, and not just because of the improved burrs. The wider grinding range is exceptional for all coffee preparation methods except espresso. With new anti-static technology for less mess when grinding, a redesigned hopper for smoother bean delivery, and an expanded 100g catch tray, your coffee enjoyment will be even better!

A piece of everything

This grinder has a lot to offer for professional home grinding or even smaller businesses. Here, we will introduce it to you piece by piece. 👇

Extremely quiet
Nice and uniform grinding quality
Versatile and equilibrium: clarity and body
Easy to dial in
Not the best UI: flimsy lid, statics...
Burr fittings are not high quality

It grinds faster, quieter and more consistently than my previous grinder - the Baratza Encore. I am writing this review after 2.5 months of daily use.
Design
Statics. It doesn't make that much of a mess even without using the RDT (Ross Droplet Technique). In the case of Encore, it was almost impossible to do without water.
Magnet at the container
This is probably where the positives end for me personally. Yes, I just bought a (better) grinder, it does the job excellently, but the user experience falters. Hence 4.5 stars. At the same time, version 2 is said to have fixed problems from number one. I'm guessing it would frustrate me even more.
Retention. It's terrible. "Knocker" literally does nothing. After squeezing, the rest of the coffee does not spill out. Rather what I did with Encore - "poor man's bellows" works. As there are "bellows" in espresso grinders, I simulate this by lifting and returning the lid, which blows through the path and returns some ground coffee to my container.
The lid is quite flat. I was used to using the lid as a measuring cup for the coffee I want to grind.
The lid of the coffee pot does not fit perfectly. It is rubber/silicone and has a few millimeters of free space. It doesn't look pretty.
Pouring from the container is a bit frustrating. It doesn't look like a "glass" inside, it has metal (?) railings on the walls on one side. It rather bothers me.
The front metal part, around the roughness adjustment wheel, which lets you go to the grinding stones and comes off, is not quite "tight". It's hard to describe, but it moves and it shouldn't, then it gives the impression that the grinder can't cost that much, it feels a bit cheap.
As you can see, there are a lot of negatives and they are more about the UX than the ground coffee itself. I recommend watching a video by Mr. Hoffmann beforehand, he conveys his frustration perfectly. Although his frustration can be a bit funny and once you buy the thing and experience it too, you'll understand him :D

The second generation grinders grind more finely and precisely, not only thanks to improved stones. The wider grind range is exceptional for all coffee preparation methods except espresso. The grinder is now also improved with anti-static technology for less mess when grinding, a redesigned hopper for smoother grain feeding and an expanded 100 gram catch hopper.

This new version will probably not be available until the summer of 2023. As soon as it is distributed in Central Europe, it will certainly appear here as well. :)
